I'm an artist and a curator. I work at a small museum in the desert of Southern California. I like my job and I get to put together cool art exhibits and events, but I also yearn to operate my own art space. I'm young, I have to work, I have debt from college, and I don't have money to move wherever I want...

So, these are supposed to be anonymous contributions but I'm not going to comply with that because one of the reasons that we as cultural producers fail to organize -- or even communicate -- effectively around economic issues is because we're taught to believe that funding is a private concern, a lack of money is shameful, and payment is linked so conclusively to merit that further knowledge can't possibly benefit, or harm, any potential laborer.

After many years of working in non-profits, dabbling in grassroots and institutional fundraising, it is safe to say that organizations are heavily reliant on major donors or foundations to keep their programs running. We reach up, seeking the perfect foundation "match" or network so we can convince someone we know with connections to make us a grant. It is a system that arose during the 1970s with the proliferation of non-profits at the same time as large wealth creation and conservative governmental control of this country.

These 9 posters were originally produced as lightboxes for Red Lines Housing Crisis Learning Center, an exhibition I designed about the politics of mortgages, held at the Queens Museum of Art in the summer of 2009.

In March 2009, Red Emma’s (a worker-owned and democratically managed bookstore and coffeehouse), the Baltimore Development Cooperative (an artist group) and the Indypendent Reader (a free quarterly newspaper) co-organized a conference in Baltimore called “The City from Below.” Our motivation for the conference came out of our own organizing experience and a shared recognition that the city is increasingly the space in which all of our diverse struggles for social justice – for affordable housing, environmental justice, prison abolition, living wages, food security, decent public education – have the potential to come together and form something greater.
